The Cinquedea [Ching-kwi-dey-uh] has held a long fascination for us here at ColdSteel. It gained popularity as the sidearm of choice for noblemen walking through the narrow alleyways and walled cities of Italy. A blade worn exclusively for civilian self-defense, it was essentially the precursor to the civilian side sword and the rapier - and yet, this instrument of personal protection seems to have owed much of its design to fashion as it did to the cut and thrust of mortal combat! RIBBED SHELL SWEPT HILT RAPIER
According to most historians the Rapier first appeared on the sword scene in the late 14th century and held sway in most of Europe until the late 16th century except in Spain where it endured clear into the 18th century. The reason for its long reign as the civilian weapon of choice for self-defense and dueling can be tied to its two major advantages.
First its long, slim, double edged blade was ideal for delivering point oriented blows at a great distance while still being able to deliver a stinging cut. And secondly, its continually evolving hilt of rings, bars, quillons, shells, and eventually, an intricately chiseled cup offered excellent protection (especially now that the armored gauntlet had been abandoned) and shed, caught or deflected blows at the sword hand and forearm with great aplomb.
Sadly, while never proven ineffective or obsolete, the rapier eventually succumbed to the dictates of fashion and gave way to the emerging small sword. Happily ColdSteel has chosen to revive the Rapier with our own interpretation designed by Dave Baker. The long, narrow blade is combat sharp and beautifully polished with a single wide fuller at the forte to assure perfect balance. The hilt also reflects the best in craftsmanship and materials fashioned from Stainless Steel featuring a classic ribbed shell and multiple bars, quillons and knuckle bow for unparalleled hard protection. COLICHEMARDE AND DAGGER
The Colichemarde emerged on the sword scene in the late 1600's during the decline of the Rapier and the rise of the small sword. Its long suit was its uniquely shaped blade that was extra wide at the forte then stepped down or narrowed for the rest of its length before ending in a wicked point. The advantage of this configuration was it allowed the sword to be used to parry or oppose even the heaviest weapons without breaking, yet remain light and supple enough to take full advantage of its lightning quick point.

Thompson has long been an admirer of the Colichemarde due to its great versatility in attack or defense so we enlisted the aid of our good friend Dave Baker, and made our own modern interpretation. True to form, our blade mirrors the original design concepts with an extra long and wide forte that abruptly tapers down to an acute and deadly point. For over a century, most of the Western world has remained convinced that a point-oriented, thrusting sword is superior to an edge-oriented cutting sword. There are, however, a series of books by D.A. Kinsley that cast a skeptical light on this running debate. Kinsley recounts numerous incidents (collected form battlefields throughout the British Empire) where cutting swords proved equal, if not superior, to thrusting swords in deciding the outcome of a skirmish.

By the mid-1600's dueling was at the height of its popularity. In fact, this trend for settling affairs of honor with steel reached such heights that King Louis XIII of France outlawed dueling for fear of losing too many of his important dignitaries to this dangerous pursuit! Aristocratic noblemen saw it as their manly duty to defend their honor at sword-point, and as such began not only seeking out the knowledge and training imparted by specialist sword masters, but also exploring new types of weapons to help them gain a decisive edge. One particular sword began to gain popularity - a smaller, lighter and faster version of the Rapier that was easier to carry and quicker in combat. A precursor to what would eventually become the Small Sword referred to by many simply as the “transitional rapier'. There are two basic types of straight bladed swords used in China. One is fairly long and heavy known as the Wu Jian or "Martial Sword". The other is substantially lighter and called a Wen Jian or "Scholar's Sword" and was primarily carried for personal self defense.
After studying books and video tapes on the history and use of both weapons, we have decided to make our own battle worthy Gim (Wu Jian) for serious collectors and practitioners of Chinese Martial Arts.
The blade of our Wu Jian is made out of 1055 Carbon steel and measures 30" long by 11/8" wide. For cutting and slashing, both edges are quite sharp and they terminate in a strong, useful point for stabbing. The traditionally styled guard and pommel are cast out of thick sturdy brass and fit snugly on a stout Rosewood handle that is both highly decorative as well as functional.

The main competition to the Bowie knife from the late 1830's to the period just after the Civil War was the Arkansas Toothpick. The Arkansas Toothpick got its namesake as an ironic reference to the coarse, rough and tumble culture that populated the lowlands of Arkansas and the Mississippi delta in the mid 19th century. Travelling journalists from Europe often made up stories about how they commonly saw men and old boys picking their teeth with giant knives that they dubbed Arkansas Toothpicks. Like the Bowie it was frequently a large knife almost always double edged with a sharp acute point. The knife almost always had a double quillon guard and many were fancy and some imitated the Bowies of the day in size and appearance. Sure, some were plain, but most were elaborately decorated. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, there were two types of sabers issued to the Federal Cavalry: "light" and "heavy". The light version was popular, but the heavy model, dubbed the "Old Wrist Breaker" was the one worth owning, as it was a superior weapon. Its 36" blade offered big reach advantages over most sabers, and its substantial weight gave it the leverage to easily crush bones and sever limbs or even a head with a single blow. The brass guard had three bars to protect the hand and the grip was wire bound leather and capped with a sturdy pommel. In its double ringed, steel scabbard, it could be easily attached to a saddle or to a belt.

ColdSteel's Rondel Dagger is inspired by historical examples of the combative incarnation of this medieval dagger. Rather than a multi-purpose tool, this version was a specialized weapon. Did you know that the name of the Saxon race was derived from the knife they carried? Its true the Sax knife was so important in their daily lives that an entire people became known by it. So, what was so special about this knife that it endured from the from the 6th to the 12th century? The answer is, it was easy and cheap to make and incredibly versatile and effective. Usually found without a guard, with a simple wood or bone hilt it offered a long wide, thick blade with a straight edge and a sloping point (easy to forge). This made it just about ideal as it chopped, sliced, hacked, whittled and carved and was no slouch in a fight as the weight forward balance of the blade and sloping point made ferocious chopping and thrusting strokes effortless. Over the years we have become quite enamored with the history and work potential of the sax so we decided to make a simple version we call the Woodsman's Sax. our factory has used only traditional materials for our Japanese sword's fittings. The Tsuba (guard), Fuchi (collar), and Kashira (pommel), are expertly made and finely crafted in nickel-silver brass.
The Habaki (blade collar) is hand made out of nickel-silver brass and each hilt is covered in Samé (ray skin) and tightly wrapped in the traditional style with black silk cord. A beautiful Menuki (a small ornamental sculpture inserted between the ray skin and the cord wrappings on the handle) enhances the sword's aesthetic appearance and makes for a sword that is as traditional looking as we can possibly make it.
All feature fully sharpened 1055 carbon steel blades, each heat treated to a spring temper. The blade surface is then given a careful polish by hand, with a distinctive mirror polish applied to the fuller (blood groove).

The Norman lust for battle and ravenous desire for land and treasure can, like their famous sword be undoubtedly traced to their Viking forefathers who wrenched their homeland in northwestern France from the hands of Charles the Simple in the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur- Epte in 911 AD.

Hungary by virtue of its position on the world map is a country that straddles the cultural influence of both the East and the West. This influence is, of course, directly echoed in Hungarian weapons. The Hungarian Saber is primarily a cutting, slashing weapon mostly used from horseback although thrusting with it on foot was not unknown. The blade of our saber is made from 1055 high carbon steel with a hard spring temper. It has a hatchet point making it wider at the tip or point than at the guard. The guard of our saber has very wide sturdy quillons. The wider quillons offer greater protection to the hand and forearm. Also because of their greater width, a skilled swordsman can catch a blow aimed at his hand, wrist, or forearms with a minor twist of his wrist as the long quillons cover a lot of real estate and minimal movement by the defender is all that is required to block the path of an oncoming blade. This saber was widely used by the British and their Prussian allies under General Blucher in the Battle of Waterloo. The blade was derived from the ferocious Indian Talwar and was reviled by the French who protested its use due to the horribly destructive wounds it inflicted. In fact, this saber was so successful as a cutting weapon, that the German Cavalry continued to use it right up to the beginning of the 20th century!
